“There is no compulsion in religion.” Qur'an 2:256
A lone tree on a hill at golden hour
Day 14 of 30 · Why are we here?

The morning light

Before you read

This surah came after a short gap in revelation, when an opponent taunted the Prophet Muhammad that his Lord had abandoned him. It answers: your Lord has not left you, nor is He displeased. Then it tells him to care for orphans and those who ask for help, because he himself had once been an orphan in need.

93:1I swear by the forenoon,

93:2and by the night when it becomes peaceful,

93:3your Lord (O Prophet,) has neither forsaken you, nor has become displeased.

93:4Surely the Hereafter is much better for you than the present life.

93:5And of course, your Lord will give you so much that you will be pleased.

93:6Did He not find you an orphan, and give you shelter?

93:7And He found you unaware of the way (the Sharī‘ah ), then He guided you.

93:8and He found you in need, then made you need-free.

93:9Therefore, as for orphan, do not oppress him,

93:10and as for the beggar, do not scold him.

93:11And about the bounty of your Lord, do talk.
